Over Røldalsfjellet to Sauda

A road as fantastic as the fv520 Sauda-Røldal is in itself worth an extra trip. You don't have to do the whole round trip, but feel free to take a trip over the mountain to Sauda when you pass Haukeli on the way.

For å sitere Klaus Busse som leder designavdelingen hos Maserati: “This road is part of the absolutely breathtaking rv520 between Sauda and Røldal. Some of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve seen on all my travels.”

In Sauda, you can visit the central swimming pool, hike in historic Åbøbyen, visit Minizoo and play 18-hole miniature golf at Andedammen, play golf or take a drive to Vanvik and enjoy the fjord landscape from the heights.

Annas Kafé på Tinghaug gir deg en unik opplevelse på en minneverdig plass.

Take a stroll in Åbøbyen.

Åbøbyen (Amerikabyen), or Åbø as the district is called, is a structured urban development based on the American model in Sauda, which was built between 1915 and 1940. The owners of Sauda Smelter were required by the municipality to build housing for their employees, and the district was built in three parts. The lower section was for the lowest working class, the middle section for white-collar workers and the upper section for directors and others in high positions.

Allmannajuvet is an area where zinc was mined between 1888 and 1899. Today, the area has been rebuilt by architect Peter Zumthor, with toilet facilities, a mining café and museum buildings. Zumthor himself describes the buildings as a monument to the workers who lived and died there. The architecture includes three modest buildings. The simple but spectacular buildings in the gorge are designed in an industrial building tradition that blends well into the terrain. They should look as if they have always been there.

You will be guided into Allmannajuvet, the area with the buildings as well as along the mine path and into the lower mine. You will be equipped with a helmet and lantern. Inside the mine it is dark, cold and raw, and it is important to wear good clothes and shoes.

Annas Kafè – Tinghaug

Anna's Café gives you a unique experience in a memorable place, open every Sunday with homemade cakes, waffles and coffee, amidst the artwork of painter Samuel Tveit. In addition to good food and drink, there are also temporary art exhibitions in the basement by local painters.

There is seating on both floors and in the courtyard, weather permitting. The café is based solely on voluntary labor, and is part of the Samuel Tveit Interest Group. All income goes to expenses in connection with the café operation, and to the maintenance/refurbishment of Tinghaug. Anna's Café has been an unparalleled success story, and since opening in May, young and old have filled Anna's room every Sunday. At most, several hundred have stopped by in one day.

Sauda Smelteverk og Åbøbyen

Åbøbyen is a district in Sauda municipality, developed mainly in the first part of the 20th century by the American factory owners.

Åbøbyen was planned as a garden city with beautiful parks, grand avenues, well-regulated streets, tennis courts, a sports field, library and shop, school and hospital. Even though the architect-designed houses were of a good standard by the standards of the time, there were differences between people: The streets told you who you were. Haakonsgaten is the "parade street" between the director's residence and the factory gate. At the bottom of the street, closest to the noise and dust from the factory, lived the workers with the lowest status and least seniority. Further up the street, with increasingly nicer houses and better rents, the foremen, lower officials and higher officials lived in succession - in the same street as the director.

Similar residential areas can be found in other industrial towns, such as Odda, Tyssedal, Jørpeland, Flørli, Glomfjord, Rjukan and Eydehavn.

"We intend to build the healthiest and best-equipped factory plant of its kind in Norway - a plant that will be a credit to Norway, the district, the government and ourselves."[2] EFP CO Ltd
